Under the impression that I had a sprained ankle that only needed prescription anti-inflammatory, I literally teared up as my podiatrist informed me that I had a hairline fracture along my foot and had to wear a rehabilitation boot (total fashion faux pas by the way) for two weeks. After the bad news I became totally depressed (well not really, every writer needs a hyperbole here and there... right?) and "blah!"

Eva Marcille

Sadly, my training took a back seat and so did the fundraising. It didn't feel quite right to ask for donations for a fund-race when my new nickname was "Hop-A-Long," and the latest cat calls were, "Just hop on the good leg Baby!" Comments like that were absolutely mortifying; wearing "the boot" was not fun; especially when I was trying to rock my new do! Anyways, in the past two weeks I learned the comfort of anonymity in the city. Every time I caught someone staring or pointing at "the boot", I redeemed myself with my new mantra, "I'll never see that person again. I'll never see that person again." Fortunately for me, it worked and I still walked with my head held high.

"The Boot"

So today, for the first time in two weeks, I was actually able to wear shoes that matched each other and my outfit. After 14 days I was able to walk (not hastily hop) across the pedestrian walkway, and after 336 hours, my left foot and I feel great!

Tapping into my psychic powers, I knew that I would no longer have to wear "the boot" after today and thus decided to take the day off and celebrate my rehabilitation. I spent the day enjoying the sights, chit chatting with friends and chillin' in a comfy coffee shop drinking Iced Coffee, munching on a cheese danish, listening to a Jazz band and catching up with my blog. This day couldn't be better! I might even do Happy Hour later, hmmm...

TRAINING

At this point my main focus is to train and of course, fundraise! $2,830 in two months is no easy feat! It's time to pound the pavement and help encourage pledged supporters to make their donations as soon as possible. By the way, have YOU donated yet? I took the advice of my podiatrist and my coach and decided (very reluctantly) that it is best that I participate in the half, rather than the full marathon. So instead of 26.2 miles, Brittany will be completing 13.

I know 13 miles is still a big accomplishment but the enthusiasm of working towards a huge goal has died a bit as the magnitude of the goal has shrunk by 50%. On the other hand, I'm hooked to this running thing and am hopeful that I will take part in a more challenging marathon next year (writing that on my "Goals to Accomplish in 2011 List" right now!). I'm taking it slow, and am patiently waiting for my 'personal' training schedule from coach to help me get back on track with the other half marathoners. So in the mean time I'll take a 30 minute jog here, a push up or two there (another hyperbole, I suck at pushups!) and I'll walk around NYC sans "the boot," as much as possible until my 'personal' training schedule comes in.
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: georgia; sprained my ankle coming out of the subway station on my way to work. It was swollen and blue- every runner's nightmare! What made it even worse was that I had an 8 mile race the next day in Central Park; a race that I was more than ready for ! My life officially sucked that day. I limped to work, iced it, wrapped it and visited the nurse's office. The verdict: "stay off the ankle until Monday- no walking and definitely no running. If the swelling and pain doesn't go away by then, visit a specialist." YIKES!

This weekend was probably going to be one of the best this summer: my race, a concert, a house party, hanging with the girls, possibly a movie and a bone marrow drive- I couldn't go to any. *sad face here* My butt has been tied to my bed for the entire weekend and Netflix has become my new Best Friend. So disappointing... BUT everything happens for a reason, though I am not quite sure what that reason is as yet. My good friend Mama T says that it probably happened because I needed the time to reflect, take a breather and think about the future but I don't know if I buy that one. I already know that my future is geared towards and that is my marathon and raising those funds. Having a Plan B just isn't an option for me. I'm mostly concerned about whether or not I will be able to run again; ankle shmankle, Brittany needs to run!

With running and this marathon on the top of my priority list, staying in bed all weekend and missing out on its fun events was definitely worth it. Plus I was grateful for the time to catch up with my parental units, concerned friends and my roommate TC- who cooked me an awesome lunch by the way! Today's Sunday and it's safe to say that the R&R has paid off and I think that by the end of the week I will be back on my feet in no time. I will, however, still get an X-ray just to be sure that my ankle isn't terribly injured.

ANKLE SPRAIN TIPS
How to wrap an Ankle
Ankle Sprain Treatment

Brittany's Things To Do When 'Bed Ridden'
1. At this point it's GOING to happen. My training is on point, I'm focused and more importantly I am committed. Committed to the running. Committed to the cause. And committed to helping thousands of people who need funds to help raise awareness about Leukemia or Lymphoma, and improve cancer patient services.

I used to believe (like many people still do) that running 26.2 miles (without a break) is pretty much impossible and those able to complete a marathon of that magnitude (within several hours) are athletically talented. But, I have to say that Team In Training was right, this just isn't true.

I appreciate the love and encouragement so many of my friends, family and new found supporters are showing me. It is very touching and thus it is only fitting that I change the heading of my blog from "Can I do the Impossible?" to "Doing the Impossible!"

No If's, And's, But's or Maybe's... Its sad to say but I think the most important lesson I've learned is that people and life let you down, and sometimes the disappointment can leave you feeling like you're in the middle of nowhere. No, this isn't a sob story, but acknowledging this fact paves the way to answering a fundamental question, "Why the hell am I running???" I found my answer today...

Another personal record for me happened this morning: 8.79 miles! This personal triumph, however, was faaaar from graceful. Besides being hot and sweaty, my gluteus maximus was killing me, my eyes were stinging me (from a mixture of sweat and last night's unmoving eye liner, don't you just hate that?) and I was cursing the whole way! "F*%$...Ra$$hole... Sc#^#... Mother F#%$@!" You get the idea! There were scary dogs, the scent of dog pee, that random chipmunk tail and me, dodging kids, prams and those rude, trail hogging bikers! They definitely deserved the Mother F#%$@er title. My 8.79 miles weren't fun and they weren't easy but, I did it! That in itself is amazing, and there, in that personal moment, lies the answer to my question. I run to conquer. I run to achieve. I run to satisfy myself. Despite this week's or last year's let downs, set backs, disappointments, etc that shit just didn't matter today and it won't tomorrow. Like a crack addict, I run to self medicate, and like a baby, I'm beaming because I did it all by myself.

Had to show 'exactly' where hurts!

MORE HIGHLIGHTS

Sometime this week there were violent assaults on two young women who were running in the evening along Riverside Park around 120th St. This is why I have my No.1 unbreakable rule: "NO RUNNING AFTER DARK." I don't care how cool, quiet and calm it is, night time running is not happening! My life is too valuable! Anyways, about 5.5 miles in and on my way back to my apartment, Fox 5 News and Eye Witness News interrupted my run to ask my thoughts on the incident and what it is that I am doing or am prepared to do to protect myself. My reply: "Buy some mace and NO RUNNING at Night time." I'm not going to be a star but for an island girl, being on NY local news is a big deal. Damn! I shoulda plugged in my blog to get donations... shit! I was looking pretty busted too!

Check my 1 second news debut here! I wore sunblock today but that sun is brutal! Plus there was some a$$ hole having fun with a leaf blower; a hat would have shielded my eyes from the dust.

That Fuel Belt... holding a water bottle in my hand is NOT an option!

An Arm Band for my iPhone... holding that in my hand is no longer an option either

Wireless, sports headphones

New socks ... Yup! I don't think I need to explain why... do I?

Synthetic-Blend Clothing... I sweat ALOT, I need clothes that will dry quickly and keep me cool. This pertains to socks and sports-bras as well.

MORE QUESTIONS

Wizard of Oz. 1939. Dorothy in her Ruby Red Slippers!

On reading one of my FB wall comments today, I couldn't help but wonder if my shoes really encouraged my newfound confidence and progress. I was struggling with 2 to 3 miles for about a month until I bought my new NIKE's. On their second test run, I accomplished 7 miles! Shamefully, I admit that I've been envisioning myself (in my new shoes of course) in one of NIKE's million dollar commercials, just running in these AMAZING shoes. As weird as it may sound I can't help but feel like, "The secret's in the shoes!" My weak ankles aren't a problem anymore and my steps feel... cushioned; protected. I literally see myself skipping down a yellow brick road with Tin Man and Scarecrow on my arm, in my new NIKE's (those "bad girls" are red too), clicking my heels three times and chanting, "I will Run those 26.2 Miles!"

Only thing I'm missing now is my very own Toto...

My New NIKE'S!!

TheNew Sneakers... You can use water fountains in parks, but some runners prefer to carry their own, using either hand-held water bottles or hydration belt, such as a Fuel Belt. During a longer run (90 minutes or more), some of your fluid intake should include a sports drink (like Gatorade) to replace lost sodium and other electrolytes. And don't forget to rehydrate after your run. Usually 8 to 24 ounces is fine, but it varies based on running conditions. You should drink enough so you have to use the bathroom within 60 to 90 minutes post run. If your urine is dark yellow after your run, you need to keep rehydrating. Tight clothing restricts that process, and dark colors absorb the sun's light and heat. Light colors reflect the sun from your skin.

Wear synthetic-blend clothing. Avoid wearing cotton when running because it holds your sweat and doesn't dry quickly, which can lead to chafing. Synthetic fabrics (such as CoolMax or Dri-Fit) wick moisture away from your skin so cooling evaporation can occur. This applies to everything you're wearing, including socks, underwear and sports bras!

Use sunscreen. Apply your sunscreen (at least SPF 15) before you get dressed for your run. Some summer running clothes are made of mesh or very thin fabric, so they might not provide protection from the sun's rays. Also, your clothes move when you run (or you may choose to take off some clothes, like your shirt). So it's best to make sure you're fully covered with sunscreen.

Be educated. Get familiar with the signs of heat-related problems, such as dehydration and heat exhaustion, so you recognize them in yourself or a running partner. If you feel faint, dizzy, disoriented, have stopped sweating, or your skin is cool and clammy, slow down or stop running. His speech was inspirational and most importantly highlighted what a genuinely nice and down to earth person he is.
He was so great that I couldn't help using his advice for my approach towards running: "Be confident and even if you aren't keep that to yourself." Well I pretty much messed up the second part (I mean my blog is called "Can I Do The Impossible"), but at this point, I have a pretty good hang of the confidence bit.

At this stage in the game I really don't doubt my ability to run those 26.2 miles, I'm actually more worried about my fundraising. Me I can count on but the ability or willingness of others to donate... ummm not so much. Times are hard, people are busy and I hate asking for money! Shifting gears one, two, three have boosted my running and frame of mind, so now its about shifting into fourth and fifth gear so that I will accomplish my $3,900 fundraising goal by mid september. If you think you can help, feel free to donate to Team In Training at the link below. He didn't exactly say those things but after that Q&A segment, that clearly was what he was doing. His success and talent has inspired so many women to try their hand at Special Events Decor and Planning; I'm obviously one of them! But I say all this because I realized that in writing this blog I hope to reach that person (or persons) who always wanted to run but never had the confidence or knowledge to do so. Who, like the old me, make a mountain out of a mole hill and decide not to make the climb towards actually running a few miles one day.

David Tutera & I Date: 7/6/10

With Team In Training I have learned that it doesn't hurt to try and it definitely doesn't hurt to fail. New Attitude... *shift*... New Goal *shift*

The Beginner has become Intermediate. Today I ran 7 miles on the Treadmill at a 2% incline and it felt great! I wanted to push myself even further but according to the Injury Prevention Clinic, I must stick to the schedule. OMG! 7 miles might not be a lot to the advanced runner but it is to M-E. Not too long ago 3 miles was a stretch for me and 5 miles seemed like the very top of the mountain; so to have "Brittany-ran-7-miles" in the same sentence is a shocker to me!

NEW SNEAKERS

I went to New York Running Company a few days ago and did the whole "Running/ Foot Assessment" and found a great pair of Nike's: the Triax+ 13. They are perrrrfect! they support my underpronation running style and my low arch, plus I got them a size bigger to compensate for swelling due to long runs. They aren't pink but they're hot just the same. I ran 3 miles for their first wear and I admit it took me a while to get used to them... I really missed my old Pumas BUT... after today I don't think I can wear another shoe again!

Nike iPod Sensor

More Kudos to Nike (and the iPhone)- I have the iPod sensor which acts like a pedometer/mp3 player/ workout assistant and I'm over the moon about it too. Using the Nike+iPod App, during my run a woman's voice tells me the distance I've run, how much I have left to run and my pace while acting like an mp3 player. During the "I just wanna stop running" slumps this App has the power song option (mine is Come Again by Thornley) and it keeps me motivated. At the end of a run it gives me a summary of my workout: pace, miles run, calories burned... you get the picture.

ADDICTION

From the beginning of my commitment to Team In Training, members always say, "Get ready, running will turn into an addiction!" At first I scoffed, "Yeah, yeah... this is a one time thing for me!" But in all honesty I feel like that's slowly changing; I don't know if I can give running up. There's nothing like a good run; good bye troubles, stress... life. Plus it also helps you to have a new appreciation or understanding of your body and what it can do. Today, for instance, I decided to stop following the beginner's training schedule and do intermediate (hence the 7miles today) and couldn't be more shocked! I thought that 5 miles was going to be the end of me today but it wasn't, and to be honest I could have kept going but I want to and should stick to my training schedule. You are only supposed to increase your runs 1 to 2 miles per week and I increased mine by 3! Next week I anticipate 8-9 miles and can only look forward to completing those 26.2 miles in October.

“Sooner or later, you start taking yourself seriously. You know when you need a break. You know when you need a rest. You know what to get worked up about and what to get rid of. And you know when it's time to take care of yourself, for yourself. To do something that makes you stronger, faster, more complete. Because you know it's never too late to have a life. And never too late to change one.” ~ Nike

SAN FRAN HERE I COME!!!

Running Amidst Pot Holes

  TnT's "Injury Prevention Clinic"

I really need to get a new pair of running shoes! I simply can't put it off any longer and would rather pay the $100 for a hot new pair of sneaks that, of course, will look fly and facilitate my running than pay hundreds of dollars on Physical Therapy. Though the clinic @ Finish Line Physical Therapy (119 West 23rd Street, Suite 304) was impressive, I really don't want to risk going there. *cringe*

A Physical Therapists Running Tips:
1. FOLLOW the Schedule... that means no more slacking!
2. Stretch after exercise... its better to stretch warmed up muscles.
3. Have a 5 to 10 minute warm up session before the intense running begins
4. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate! H20 all the way... NYC heat is NO joke!
5. Strength Train

All these key tips will ensure that I will avoid very painful and "expensive" injuries that runners usually encounter.

Balancing on a Bosu Ball

Prevention 101

Shin Splints Prevention:

New Shoes

Calf Stretches & Calf Raises e.g "balancing on a Bosu ball" (this looks particularly fun)

IT Band Injury Prevention:

IT Band Stretch

Knee Injury Prevention:

Shoes (there it is again)

Lunges

Squats (these are great, they work the glutes a.k.a the butt)

Shoe Shopping... YAY!

Payday is around the corner and I cannot wait to get a new pair of sneakers. Determined to buy a pair of NIKE's, I visited their website and took the "Find Your Perfect Shoe" test. Questions were based on Gender, Surface, Foot Arch and Stride. I got a few results and I believe the test to be accurate. The questions NIKE asked were similar to TnT's "How To Choose Your Running Shoes" guidelines. Okay soooo... 1. I'm female (duh!), 2. Surface: road, 3. Arch: Medium and 4. Stride: Underpronation.

With the help of NIKE's "How To Check" coach, EUREKA! I found it! The "NIKELunarfly+" (emphasis on the 'plus' please)! I never thought I could be so excited to buy a pair of running shoes; I'm literally tickled pink!

New York Running Company will definitely be seeing this month's paycheck!

The Perfect Tempo: a secret to long distance running

I know I know... it's been a month since my last post, but I want to focus on the good news, "I'M BACK!!"

Though I've not been updating my blog I have been training. Running (though challenging at times) has become one of the most liberating and de-stressing things I have ever done and it makes sense that one of NIKE's many inspiring slogans is "Run To Be..."

MY PERFECT TEMPO

Lornah Kiplagat: 3 time winner of the NYRR New York Mini 10K

I have been at a 3- 4 mile constant for the last month but I am certain that this figure will increase during this upcoming week. My confidence comes from finding "My Perfect Tempo,"a faster-paced workout also known as a lactate-threshold, LT, or threshold run. This technique is used by professional long distance runners like Paul Tergat, Lornah Kiplagat and regular folk like M-E! I tried it for the first time last week Monday and at the end of my run I had accomplished a new goal. As the minutes went by I could feel my endurance increasing; my easy pace became faster and my hard pace, well as you hopefully guess was faster too! If the gym wasn't going to close I could have easily made 5 miles and who knows, I could have pushed myself to 6!

MY PERFECT TEMPO: TREADMILL TECHNIQUE
(For Beginners- those who run 15 miles or less a week)

At a 1% incline

- Warm up: 10 minutes easy running or brisk walking

- 1 min hard 1 min easy... do this 6 times

- Run another 5 minutes easy.

- Repeat again: 1 min hard 1 min easy... X6

- Cool down: 10 minutes easy running. Then stretch.

On "Hard" I challenged myself and went a bit faster each time; on "easy", I found a pace that was comfortable, almost as "relaxing" as taking a brisk walk. Practicing this technique did wonders for me, I also was able to practice the "right" upper body position for running. Learning the technical "How To's" of running makes this "crazy" venture of mine much more interesting. I definitley feel the difference in my performance and my ability to run longer. Today, 26.2 miles doesn't sound so bad (Ha! Who am I kidding?!).

SAN FRANCISCO HERE I COME!!

Besides training I have been more vocal about my FUND-RACE and have been picking up funny stories and tips here and there. My favourites are from a co-worker of mine who did a marathon of her own a few years back and (like most New Yorkers) she knows about Team in Training...

TIP: 26.2 miles is a looooong run, and yes I will get hungry, so she suggested that the day of my race I should walk with a handful (or two) of little bite size snicker bars for a boost of energy along the way. I loooooove chocolate, especially Snickers so that definitely won't be hard for me to do!

Yummmmm...

STORY: A lot of marathoners (especially the vets) are "serious" about achieving their time goal; NOTHING is going to stop them from running those 26.2 miles in record time... not even stopping to go to the bathroom! Fact: some runners actually "pee" themselves as they run so they don't have to stop! And with ALL that drinking there's definitely a tonne of peeing going on! *cringe*

I'm serious about my running but I definitely won't be peeing myself; Bring on the Port-a-Potties!!!!

Dear Cancer...

Dear Cancer,

You have brought tragedy to millions of families and the whisper of your name has caused the bravest of men to shed tears. My plan of action was therefore to make some “fat free” vanilla cupcakes- a recipe that I got from “Cook Yourself Thin.” I'm not exactly the best chef so making cup cakes from scratch , was a small yet significant triumph for me. Not to toot my own horn but, they tasted so good I "taste tested" two!

At Noon, like clockwork, my co-workers head downstairs to the cafeteria for lunch and then gather around the office's communal conference table. I decided to take that time as an opportunity to inform everyone about my cause: "to raise $3,900 by October so that I may participate in a marathon dedicated to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society." The response was standard- "that's commendable"- and some of my co-workers were more than happy to donate. I raised $20 that day!

THE SNUB

I was disappointed however that only three of my cupcakes disappeared and shamefully, I admit to have eaten one. There were 12 people in my office yesterday who I am certain new about the cupcakes, so imagine my embarrassment. I received one good review though but the fact of the matter is that I think a lot of people were put off by the “fat-free” label, and the absence of butter. As one of my co-workers put it (after questioning her about my cupcakes via a disheartened e-mail), “No honey they are actually good, I am teasing since they are healthy, and you know how I feel about healthy :)!”
HA! That’s the last time I bring healthy goodies to work!

QUICK FACT: The cupcakes were fat free because I substituted the butter with Zucchini. In baking, vegetarians use apple sauce as a substitute for eggs .

Later that day in the Lucille Roberts locker room, a woman no younger than 60 saw my cupcakes and commented that she couldn’t eat “those things” anymore. When I explained to her that that were delicious and “fat-free,” her response was “No thanks! I can’t do the diet thing. I don't want to eat card board… I eat in moderation.” KABOOM!… Is healthy food so badly stereotyped??? Why doesn’t anyone believe me that they are tasty??? Anyway, I don’t make the same mistake twice and I definitely won’t be helping my co-workers in their attempt to lose weight, or consume less calories. If they’d prefer guilty rather than guiltless, so be it! Within two weeks time I’ll be back! This time the goodies will be too sinful to resist. Packed with all those calories and saturated fat that we all pretend to abhor.

"Are you pondering what I'm pondering Pinky?"

"My plan of action you ponder??"

Bowser

A big, fat, icing covered, double layered Chocolate Cake. Wednesday & Thursday's physical routine consisted of typing, brisk walks and sprints to catch the train, and the casual bending to pick-up and file. It was a break very much needed...

After the 2 days (which I thoroughly enjoyed), I was ready to get my butt back into gear. Its weird, I had actually missed the gym- the rush of endorphins after a good run, seeing & feeling the results of your hard work *smile*. Very addictive...

The plan for my grand return (to training) was to take it easy and not hit the treadmill. I still have to buy "appropriate" running shoes and I must be rested enough to run the lower loop twice on Tuesday, plus I have plans to practice the Central Park route on Sunday. To still get Cardio in, without putting too much pressure on my joints, I'll do the elliptical instead. I swear it is the designated "Woman Machine;" five years of gym going and I've never seen a guy use one! Why is that??

QUICK FACT: If you're already a runner, the wear on the bottom of your running shoes will give insight into your running style. This allows the salesperson to better assess what types of shoes that are best designed for YOU.

Despite my ambition to get back into the gym, my efforts "lacked luster" since it was a mental battle to finish each set. I think Friday was one of my super girly days where I "hated exercise." Sweating felt gross, feeling the burn was not welcomed and the machines smelled too much like Disiclin. All I wanted to do was to get out of there! On the bright side however, I did finish my cross training routine and was able to work on my abs!

Courtesy www.democraticunderground.com

EXERCISE TIP: Last Tuesday the Beginner's Coach added the "Plank- Abdominal Exercise. This will improve stability while strengthening your core. The aim is to hold that position for 1 minute, but you can get there in steps. Try 4 sets of 15 counts, then 2 counts of 30, so eventually you can hold that plank position for 60 counts (1 min.); I also use the exercise ball for variety sometimes. BENEFIT: The plank will help you to achieve flat, washboard abs. Don't forget to breathe as you count!!

Plank with Ball

WEEKEND PLANS

Saturday will be maintenance day; testing my endurance by doing 30 to 40 minutes on the Elliptical- the equivalent to running 3 miles or more, along with some squats and lunges using 15 lb. dumbbells. I don't have, nor do I want "strong looking" arms.

Sunday, "Mama T" and I are sticking to the plan, that is heading down to Bethesda Terrace to practice the lower loop and then baking for a "mini" bake sale on Monday in hope to get donations from Co-workers. I haven't decided what I am going to bake yet but all I know is that the goodies must be low in calories and fat. The ladies at work won't touch it if they aren't! All I know is that I am taking the recipe from Cook Yourself Thin: A Delicious Way To Drop a Dress Size. Love that show by the way- so inspiring! The offer free recipes and tips on their website- check it out!!

DONATING
For two weeks I think that the progress of my donations are going pretty well. I still have a long way to go though! $3,900 is a lot of money but I am confident that with your help I can get there. I am ever so grateful for every donation and am hopeful of getting more. I know Friday was payday so don't hesitate to throw a few dollars my way *Big Grin.* So PLEASE DONATE! $25 will make you a *star*...(lol)! How could my co-worker miss my hanging coat, cell phone and my obviously "in use" computer screen???? Jeeeez! Don't panic, don't panic... Everything was in there! My cell phone, building I.D, my purse; I felt like crying. The worst part is that I work in a very strict building where you need an I.D to even step unto the elevator and considering the time (6PM), the day shift's security team is gone! And even if I did get someone to open the door, my building charges $50 as a service fee...FML! Accepting my fate (and a $50 pay-check deduction), I get ready to press the elevator’s down button and like a bright light bulb *ping* I had an idea! Why not find the janitor?! Yesterday, Super Mario came to my rescue. The janitor was a Mario look-a-like with the cute Italian accent; priceless.

Obstacle 2

Courtesy My iPhone

As I go through my gym bag to change into my running clothes I realize that on this Tuesday I forgot gym pants, BUT had the sense to pack two gym shirts and two face towels?? What in the world was I thinking??? Before I gave up I decided to text my cousin in hope she was home to lend me a pair of shorts, but minutes away from the 1 Train I still had no response. Not ready to admit defeat, (another light bulb) I decided to check out Columbia’s Bookstore in hope they had what I needed… I was in luck!

Obstacle 3

On my way there the B & C trains were running late and I just happened to walk behind every slug and lost resident of NYC, but fortunately for me I was on time, which by the way, is a big deal for me. After announcements, we broke off into groups. The “beginners” challenge was to run the lower loop twice, the equivalent to 3.4 miles. After my progress on the treadmill this week I was confident that this was going to be a piece of cake, but was I wrong. About half way around the lower loop my body was exhausted- my legs felt heavy and mentally I just wasn’t there. Al I could think of was sleep. I completed the entire route and was able to complete the strength training and stretching parts but I just couldn’t shake the exhaustion.

Strength Training Tidbits:

1 set, 15 reps of: Squats & Side Lunges- *To maintain those buns of steel ^_^

3 sets, 12 reps of: Standing calf rises (1st set with feet shoulder width apart, 2nd set with ankles brought together, 3rd set with toes pointing inward)- *To prevent shin splints

Noteworthy

Concerned, I spoke to one of the coaches about my performance today… Apparently I’ve been pushing myself too much and my body is indeed tired. On the days I don’t run in Central Park I’m at the Gym- running on the treadmill and following a weight lifting routine. It appears that I need to look at my training schedule a bit more closely and being on the treadmill 4 times a week is bad for my joints. She also stressed my need for appropriate running shoes and suggested I visit Jack Rabbit or Urban Running.

I was so exhausted last night I wasn’t even able to make a post to my blog despite the day’s blog-worthy events. I don’t think I've ever been that excited to see my bed!

QUICK FACT:- When weight lifting you actually build strength on the days you don’t work out. This is because on the days you weight lift you are making minuscule tears into the muscle and your rest days are the days where the muscle repairs itself, making “OFF” days necessary!

Fast Forward

In a few minutes I will be attending the T n T's (Team in Training's) Fundraising clinic downtown; no training for me today! This weekend my girl "Mama T" and I are going to visit Central Park to take a few pictures and practice the "lower loop". She also promises to help me bake some goodies so that on Monday I can kickoff my fundraising efforts by selling healthy goodies to my fellow co-workers. Should be fun! Look out for another update later this week!

Shout Outs

I want to thank my brother “G” for helping me expand my social network in hope for more donations.

Also, please check out my boy Rice’s blog on his experiences as a Personal Trainer and Muay Thai Instructor! It’s great and more updates to come soon!

Many Thanks to my supportive Family, Friends & Followers! Dr. Kwak was recently named one of TIME Magazine's "100 Most Influential People," for his role in advancing custom-made vaccines for patients with lymphoma.

Dr. Kwak, professor and chair of the Department of Lymphoma and Myeloma at The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, has focused his work on harnessing the power of the immune system of patients with follicular non-Hodgkin's lymphoma to fight their cancer. The vaccines are developed by taking proteins from the patient's own tumor, training them to find and kill lymphoma cells and then injecting them back into the patient. Currently in late stage clinical trials, the vaccines have been shown to extend disease-free survival for more than a year.

In 2007, LLS awarded Dr. Kwak a five-year, $6.25 million Specialized Center of Research grant, our most prestigious research award. These grants are distinctive in that they encourage at least three laboratories at the same or different institutions to work together. In addition to continuing his work on the personalized lymphoma vaccines, this grant is enabling Dr. Kwak to expand his research to develop immunotherapies for patients with leukemia and myeloma as well.

Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Kwak has been on the cutting edge of researching and developing novel immunotherapies that are already showing a clear benefit for patients with cancer. Saturday I woke up with all intentions to head to Central Park and run the lower loop but the weather wasn't too conducive... The treadmill alternative didnt work out either... let's just say that I got caught up in Spring cleaning, a much needed convo with "KH" and to be honest, my need for more rest...

Mother's Day, however, was a good one. After tonnes of love and support from close friends and family I decided to "get running." Too many people are proud and supportive for me to be lazy already, so tonight I ran my beginner's 2 miles and added an extra mile to make up for Saturday's lack of the treadmill. (At this point I was elated).

YAY! I ran 3 miles today! And in truth I could've kept going but I still had to play catch up on my cross training. I ran 3 miles in good time and I had increased my treadmill pace/ speed!!! *Big Grin* Maybe I'll push for 4 miles tomorrow??

I have to say that I have been overwhelmed by the amount of people supporting this cause and reading my blog. So many people have told me, "WOW! Brit, your blog is great and 26.2 miles?!...that's amazing, I wish I could do that!" But in truth guys, trussssst me, you can. In high school I never thought I could even run a mile, so 3 mi. is a big deal to me, and 26.2 miles will be even BIGGER!

I have to admit there are moments where I want to stop blogging and give up TnT because I fear that all my blogging, Facebooking, Twittering will amount to nothing; Brit who really cares?? I feel this way especially when donations are not coming in as fast as I would like, but October is still some time away so no need to start panicking now, or should I? Despite my negativity and brief moments of insecurity, two friends really touched me this week and made me feel that what I am doing isn't such a waste.

My home girl "TW" told me that she loves my blog and has signed up as well with TnT to start training for a marathon and raise funds with the LLS; Great!! My other friend "Rice," enjoying my blog as well, was inspired to re-start his blog about his experiences as a fighter- I can't wait to read about it!

So where my donations and running are concerned, *sigh*... all I can do is take deep breaths and step by step believe I can only make progress...

**********************************************************************************
Please take some time to continue spreading the word about my blog and my cause. Also don't forget to donate- $5, $10, $15... it all helps!!!!!

With all my love...

The 7th Annual NIKE Women's Marathon (NWM)- 20,000 strong!

Today marks the 7th day since I've made the commitment to run 26.2 miles in San Francisco- I have 5.7 practice miles under my belt and have accomplished 5% of my fund-raising goal (THANK YOU SUPPORTERS!!!!), so life is marvelous!

Other than that I am sore and absolutely exhausted. Every stretch, step and sneeze hurts. As of Tuesday I have been following My Preseason Training Schedule - Run, Cross Train, Run, Cross Train. Thank God tomorrow is Friday; finally a day "OFF". If it weren't for Ludacris' "Shake Ya Money Maker" the treadmill wouldn't have seen me this week. See, as a daydreamer I've mastered the art of simulation. So in my mind, I'm shaking what "momma gave ya" for Luda, but in actual fact, I'm taking long and steady strides for 20 to 30 minutes at a time! Now if only I could picture making some paper, I would definitely run faster...

WHAT HAVE I GOTTEN MYSELF INTO?

I go through a state of euphoria when visiting the Nike Women's Marathon blog- I can't believe I'm actually going to do this! The course looks challenging but I am looking forward to it. Co-workers told me that the marathon route is very scenic, inspiring and hilly! The hills are intimidating, but with training, perseverance (and time) I can turn any mountain into a mole hill.

QUICK FACT: NIKE in Greek mythology is a winged Greek goddess who personifies "VICTORY".

The 7th Annual NIKE Women's Marathon
October 17th, 2010

START INFORMATION
Location: Union Square, San Francisco
Time: 7:00AM

FINISH INFORMATION
Location: The Great Highway (at Lincoln)
Closes: 1:00PM

And yes folks that is a sh!t load of running!! 6 hours to be exact, I can't even sit on my a$$ for that long so its going to be preeeeetty interesting to run for that long. So many questions have crossed my mind. Are there bathroom breaks? Food breaks? Water breaks? Rest breaks?? Let's just hope that the answers to all those questions are yes.

"Union Square, San Fran." It asks you, 'Are you going to be a wimp or are you going to be strong today?"- Jane Runner

Friday is definitely going to be a much needed break, but on Saturday training starts again and this time I am going to return to Central Park to run the lower loop. So no treadmill, no Ludacris and definitely no paper. If you know me well, you won't be surprised that my rocky beginning was because I was lost and late. As a "new" New Yorker, my knowledge of Central Park is zilch and my understanding of "subway time" is waaaay off; never trust Google Maps to accurately estimate how long a trip will take.

By the time I got there everyone was in their running gear and had already identified their running group, so at 10 minutes late, and still in my work clothes, I began to panic! F$#&*! My group was the first to go, so I had to hastily change in the Bethesda Terrace's smelly and cramped public bathroom (yuck!), and as I'm rummaging through my bag, doing my best to let only the sole of my shoes touch the floor, I realize, Sh*t! I forgot to pack my socks (double yuck)!!!! *Cringing* I reluctantly put on my sneaks and ran to catch up with my teammates...

THE RUN

As a beginner we had to run 1.7 miles along the lower loop route (72nd St E to 72nd St W) without a care for speed or pressure to run the whole way. I've been an avid gym-goer within the last few weeks so for the first quarter mile I was like, Ok B, you got this, but soon after it really became a mental challenge. Damn! 1.7 miles are so much easier on a treadmill! BUT right when I was about to stop running (thank God for the elder folk) a little hairy old man ran by me, so there was no way I was giving up!

Surprise surprise, I ran the whole way *big grin*. I paced my steps, my breathing and was able to run and discuss with the group's trainer my concerns for meeting the fund-raising goal and running the entire 26.2 miles. Yay! Finishing the lower loop felt so gratifying!

STRETCHING and STRENGTH TRAINING

QUIK FACT: Despite popular belief, stretching is better done after running because your muscles are warmed up.

After the run our trainer had us do some squats, lunges (Yes I! Build 'de batty!) and some other exercises to work our calf muscles- 15 reps, 4 sets. I learned that shin splints are caused from weak calves so cross training is ideal for runners. And ah, yes the stretching, my favourite part. After a nerve racking start, a good run and a few strength training sets we could finally let it all hang out. Stretching the IT Band muscle, was particularly interesting, since targeting this muscle is especially important for us, women due to our hips and running styles.

THE EXPERIENCE

Running with Team in Training (TnT) is very encouraging and an enriching communal experience. Everyone there was really nice and I was happy to notice the absence of me feeling self conscious. EVERYONE was running in Central Park- different shapes, sizes and athletic abilities. I even passed a Pomeranian or two! All in all, everyone there was really nice and I can only look forward to next week Tuesday's training session. As an incentive to keep going I'll even purchase myself a pair of "real running" shoes. Who knew that runners had to get specific sneakers to suit the shape of their feet and running style. I was even shocked to hear that I should purchase them a size bigger so I wouldn't lose a toenail; apparently your feet swell as you run.

My evening ended with a personal team shirt, a few handshakes and some rain to cool down the hot and humid evening. As I sprinted to catch the B train, I remembered one of my mother's favourite sayings, "Brittany, you made a mountain out of a mole hill."

QUICK FACT 2: Don't EVER walk around NYC, especially Harlem, in tights! ^_^

**********

Please don't forget to visit my page: Brittany's Race to Save Lives! I'm hours away from my first Training Session with Team in Training and I won't lie to tell you that I am nervous as hell. It's finally hitting me that perhaps I was a little bit too ambitious this time and the urge to back out and be ok with my 2 miles on a regular treadmill is beginning to hit me.

Now some of you may be thinking, well "heck, 2 miles is a great accomplishment!" But what you don't know is that it took me yearssss to do that! I was always the cute chubby girl who no one chose for their team during P.E (Physical Education) with Mr. Brumont at Christ the King highschool. I could barely run cross country as it was guaranteed that I
would be one of the first girls to be out of breath once leaving CKHS' gates and one of the last to re-enter them! And I did run, kick and miss a football that was right in front of me!

WHAT WAS I THINKING?!

Not only am I worried about my performance due to my history of lacking athletic abilities BUT I have the $3,900 fundraising goal looming over my head (yikes!). Despite my enthusiasm and my per...per... (what's the word)...PERSISTENCE, (aaah yes that's it) I am the only one who has made a donation; $50 that I simply don't have! Am I really going to go?...

I am on lunch break and quietly pondernig to myself whether or not I am really going to go through with this....thinking, thinking...From the corner of my eye I catch a glimpse of my name approrpiate, running shoes and I can't help but recall NIKE's famous slogan: JUST DO IT (My running shoes are Puma's by the way). Rolling my eyes and swivelling my chair around I realise that I need to embrace my decision...sigh

So far everyone from Team in Training has been really nice and I did say I would love to go running in Central Park, plus this blog thing is pretty cool. All I can do is give it a shot and try my best; Brit, JUST DO IT.

If I could retrieve all my I.D's, bank cards and SSN card without having identity fraud or theft after leaving my purse in the back of an NY yellow cab then, I CAN do this!
